CWC Sports students receive coaching from Taekwondo England

Last Thursday, CWC Sport Science and Sport students were visited by coaches from Taekwondo England who ran a variety of sessions throughout the day.

During the sessions students had the opportunity to learn the basic Taekwondo techniques such as: turning kicks, turning pushing kick and the 480 spinning kick.

They were shown the various skills needed for the sport including co-ordination, balance and most importantly discipline. Taekwondo is the art of self-defence which originated in Korea. It is one of the oldest forms of martial arts in the world, reaching back over 2,000 years. It made its first appearance in the Olympics in 1988 as a demonstration sport before becoming a full medal sport in 2000.

Students from various levels who took part in the training sessions which took place in the College’s sport hall, were coached by Tom Redding, a three-time student National Champion as well as a current competitor for the 2020 Olympics Taekwondo and Nuno Varela, National Champion and Portuguese Gold medallist.

Taekwondo coach Tom Redding said “This is a valuable experience for the students which will provide them with a greater insight of how elite athletes train.”.

Sports teacher Craig Riddle said, “Having taekwondo England athletes and coaches come to CWC allows students to experienc a new and evolving sport. And with the inclusion of a trip to the Olympic Park and World Para-Taekwondo championships in October, continues the London Olympics aim to inspire a generation.”
