The talk was organised as part of the Speakers for School programme. Launched in 2011, the UK Charity currently has a network of over 1000 leading figures in their field who donate their time as speakers and visit state schools to share their insights and experience in their area of expertise. Their primary mission is to help all pupils at state secondary schools in the UK access free talks from professionals and academics in order to encourage students.
“We were very honoured to have Sir Keith Mills visit the College to speak to our Level 3 Business and Travel and Tourism students,” said Mark Barrett, a Business Lecturer at CWC. “He comes from a working class background, left school at a younger age than students do these days, managed to establish contacts and created the Nectar Card and Air Miles schemes.”
Sir Keith is now involved in America’s Cup Sailing and the Invictus Games, a multi-sport event created by Prince Harry in which wounded, injured or sick armed services personnel and veterans take part in a wide variety of sports including track races, wheelchair basketball and sitting volleyball.
“The students who attended the event really enjoyed the talk and I think it was very beneficial for them to hear practical advice about setting up their own business and following their dreams,” added Mark. “They had the opportunity to ask questions, which a large number did which was very encouraging and Mr Mills also passed around an Olympic torch which the students also really liked.”
