CWC's Deputy Principal meets with London Mayor Sadiq Khan

Following on from the London Citizens’ Mayoral Assembly at the Copperbox in East London, Deputy Principal Pat Squires last week met with London’s new Mayor Sadiq Khan. The London Citizens delegation followed the agenda set by the Copperbox Assembly in April where over 100 students and staff represented CWC, with two students also speaking to a crowd of more than 6000 people about the need for partnerships between employers and education to address the skill shortage in London, and provide routes for young people into employment.

At the meeting in City Hall, Dr Squires spoke to the Mayor and Deputy Mayors about the Good Jobs Campaign and what the Mayor’s office could do to further promote the London Living Wage. “It was a really positive meeting,” said Dr Squires. “Reflecting on the ask made in April requesting the Mayor’s office to meet with London Citizens at least once a year, Sadiq Khan thought meeting more frequently than once a year would be beneficial and said he was happy to support the work of London Citizens.”

The Mayoral Assembly took place earlier this year, with Mayoral Conservative candidate Zac Goldsmith and Labour candidate Sadiq Khan, who was later elected as Mayor, taking part. It called on the new Mayor to support and implement a London Living rent, Rogue Landlord Taskforce, Community Land Trusts for affordable homes and a ‘Good Development’ standard. These issues were identified after a listening campaign reaching thousands of Londoners through community groups across the capital, including the College’s own Student Council and Citizens Group. CWC students Clarice Stewart and Tammy Hines spoke at the event, representing the Good Jobs campaign run by Citizens UK and OMD.

“Mr Khan also pointed out the similarities between London Citizen’s agenda and his own policy development, reinforcing his Mayor for all Londoners message,” added Dr Squires.
