Sports at City of Westminster College

As part of student life at City of Westminster College, our Enrichment team provide a wide range of activities and events for learners to take part in alongside their studies. We have a dedicated Sport Maker, Steven Dolben, who co-ordinates and manages all aspects of the College’s Enrichment sports programme. Steven is dedicated to providing and developing a varied and inclusive sporting offer for students of all levels and abilities, from recreational activities, right through to organised competitive sports.

There are a large number of benefits to participating in Sports at CWC and these include;

Friendship
Sport is a key platform for meeting new people and making new friends and connections. These relationships help students to settle in to College, and to feel more integrated into the student population and College life.

Health
Sport and physical activity helps contribute to the physical and mental well-being of students. Being active and engaged in sports provides students with a distraction from the pressures of both academic and home life, giving them an opportunity to relax, destress and feel positive. Research shows that the importance of physical activity in young people is stronger than ever. Observations by medical researchers show that those who are highly active are less likely to suffer from a variety of illnesses including diabetes, colon cancer, high blood pressure, coronary heart disease and are less likely to be obese later in life.

Personal Development & Leadership Skills
Sports also supports learning and personal development, helping those who take part develop their confidence, increase their self-esteem and build character and resilience. An important tool in the development of young people, sport embodies values and qualities such as respect, tolerance, fair play, sportsmanship, discipline, dedication and hard-work; skills which are easily transferable to work place situations. Sports teams give the opportunity to be surrounded with competitive people and coaches who can act as role models. Acting as team captain, or through individual actions to improve a team’s success is also a way to demonstrate leadership.

"Taking part in sport can create memorable experiences for young people – whether that is being able to learn a new skill, develop their athletic ability or working as part of team", said Steven. "Students are able to feel a sense of achievement on a number of different levels as a result of their participation."
