This course is ideal for learners who already have a foundation in English and want to:

What You’ll Learn

You will progress through five key stages of academic English development, each building on the last to help you reach your goals with confidence.

1. Academic Foundations

  • Writing: Sentence structure, paragraph development, topic sentences
  • Reading: Skimming, scanning, identifying main ideas
  • Listening: Understanding short lectures for gist and detail
  • Speaking: Introducing ideas clearly, pronunciation, asking questions

2. Building Core Academic Skills

  • Writing: Essay structure (introduction, body, conclusion), linking ideas
  • Reading: Identifying arguments and writer’s purpose
  • Listening: Note-taking, picking out key points in talks
  • Speaking: Presenting data, delivering short presentations

3. Intermediate Academic Practice

  • Writing: Argumentative and discursive essays, integrating evidence
  • Reading: Critical reading, distinguishing fact from opinion
  • Listening: Understanding longer academic talks and viewpoints
  • Speaking: Participating in group discussions, debating respectfully

4. Higher-Order Academic Skills

  • Writing: Synthesising sources, introductory referencing (APA/Harvard)
  • Reading: Evaluating and comparing academic texts
  • Listening: Identifying implied meanings and inference
  • Speaking: Presenting research and handling Q&As

5. Academic Independence & Exam Readiness

  • Writing: Extended writing under timed conditions, proofreading
  • Reading: Research skills, building academic vocabulary
  • Speaking: Engaging in seminar-style discussions, mock exams
