Last week, City of Westminster College was visited by London Mayoral candidate for the Respect Party, George Galloway. Mr Galloway spoke to a large group of students from a variety of course areas including A Levels and Media, about his 30 years as an MP and his bid to become Mayor of London in the upcoming election on May 5th. Students were then invited to ask questions on any aspect of Mr Galloway’s career, manifesto and his thoughts on current events.
CWC History Lecturer Alex Jones, who organised the event said, “As part of the CWC Mock Election, we have invited in 3 MPs to speak with groups of students about politics and the issues London faces at present.”
“Students really benefited from the talk – being able to ask a possible future Mayor of London questions face to face brought politics to life and showed many of the students that politics is real and that we can all have an impact on our local communities.”
George Galloway added, “It was a pleasure to meet so many informed, engaged young people and I would like to thank the College for inviting me. If I’m Mayor, I will introduce free bus journeys for all school, College and University students, and I will lead a national campaign to bring back EMA, halt academisation and abolish University tuition fees.”
The College’s mock election is being held tomorrow, Thursday 28th April between 11am – 2pm and hopes to encourage students to become interested and proactively engaged in the real Mayoral election taking place next Thursday.
