Improve your English reading, writing and communication skills with our Functional Skills English course, designed for adult learners. Whether you want to boost your confidence for everyday life, progress in your career, or prepare for further study, this course provides practical, recognised qualifications.

Courses are available at Entry Level 2, Entry Level 3, Level 1 and Level 2, and are delivered part-time at our Paddington Campus. You will typically attend one class per week over 18 or 36 weeks.

This course is ideal for:

  • Native English speakers
  • Individuals who have lived in the UK for 8+ years
  • Adults looking to improve essential English skills for work and life

Course Content

During the course, you will develop key Functional Skills English competencies, including:

  • Reading and understanding a variety of texts
  • Writing clearly and accurately for different purposes
  • Speaking, listening and communicating effectively
  • Grammar, punctuation and spelling
  • Digital skills to support reading and writing

Lessons include a mix of:

  • Individual, pair and group activities
  • Interactive classroom discussions
  • Computer-based learning

Progression

After completing your Functional Skills English qualification, you can progress to:

  • A higher Functional Skills level (up to Level 2)
  • GCSE English courses
  • Vocational courses or apprenticeships

Assessment

You will be assessed throughout the course and at the end through:

  • Formal Functional Skills exams (reading, writing and speaking & listening)
  • Ongoing tutor assessments and feedback
  • Practice tests to help you prepare for your final exams

You will also complete an initial assessment at interview, which may include online and written tasks, to ensure you are placed at the right level.

Awarding Body

Upon successful completion, you will receive a Functional Skills English qualification (Entry Level 2 to Level 2), which is nationally recognised by employers, colleges and training providers.

  • Adults aged 19+
  • A good basic understanding of English
  • Successful completion of an initial assessment at interview
