Students Awards celebrates City of Westminster College’s high achievers

A number of students were last week recognised for their outstanding achievements at City of Westminster College’s Student Awards ceremony. The event, which was held on Thursday 11th December at the college’s Sarah Siddons Theatre took place in front of fellow students and their guests, sponsors, stakeholders and members of staff.

The guest speaker at the event was the college’s Digital Marketing Manager Charlie Penrose, who shared his story from the last year. Having been diagnosed with testicular cancer in December 2013, Charlie set himself challenges over the last year to raise money for King’s College Hospital including cycling from London to Cornwall, London to Paris, swimming in freezing cold lakes, running several half marathons finally culminating in Ironman Cozumel, Mexico place in November this year. While undertaking this challenge Charlie completed a 140 mile triathlon; cycling, swimming and running circuits around the island.

There were 24 awards handed out during the evening, including the coveted Principal’s Award and an award from the Board of Governors. Three students also became recipients of Jack Petchey Foundation Awards, recognising current students who make an exceptional contribution to the college thanks to their dedication and positive attitude.

Award winner Shardonnay Roseman said, “I’m really happy and proud that I won an award. It shows that people realise all of the hard work that I have done and I’m really pleased that I could be here to accept it. The ceremony was great and I really enjoyed it – it was especially nice to bring my family along so they could see me receiving the award.” Leeroy Purcell from the School of Construction and the Built Environment who also won an award said, “It’s a great honour to be presented with an award from the college. When I completed the Level 2 Diploma in Plumbing Studies, myself and my fellow students were disappointed that the Level 3 course which we wanted to progress to was only offered during the daytime meaning it would conflict with work. We formed a group and put together a petition to ask the college to consider offering a Level 3 programme in the evening. Thanks to all of our hard work and determination CWC now offers the course in the evening, so people who work during the day are able to study it. It’s nice that the college takes the time to recognise student achievements at the end of the year.”
