Duration of course:
AS - 1 year leading to A2 in year 2.
What does the A/S include?
You will study the way that films convey meaning through the use of various conventions (e.g.camerawork, editing, sound, etc) and apply these to the analysis of a variety of films. You will also study aspects of the British and Hollywood film industries (production, distribution and exhibition) and how audiences interact with these. You will also study British Film through Cultural Study of Swinging Britain 1963 to 1973 and/or Identity Study and belonging and make a historical Comparative Study of 2 American Films.
What does the A2 include?
You will study World cinema through either Cinematic New Waves and/or Urban Stories about Power, Poverty and Conflict. You will develop your AS work through further Close Critical Film analysis. You will study Spectatorship and Documentary.
What do I need to get on to the A/S Level?
To study 3 AS levels, you need to have 5 GCSEs grades A-C (obtained in one sitting).
To study 4 AS levels, you need to have 6 GCSEs grade A-C (obtained in one sitting).
To progress to A2 you must pass A/S.
What type of assessment is used?
AS: Coursework (analyses of a film sequence (best of 2) and a Creative Project which is either an extended step outline, or a Photographed Storyboard or a short film sequence) and an end of year 3 part exam paper.
A2: Coursework (a Small-scale film research project and a Creative task which is either a film extract or a complete short film (which can be done in a group),a screenplay or an extended documentary step outline and includes a written analysis), and an end of year 3 part exam paper.
What else can I study?
Other AS/A2 subjects that particularly complement Film Studies include English, Sociology, Psychology, History, Media and Communication Studies.
