This course is suitable for:

Duration:

AS in Year 1 leading to A2 in Year 2
Mode: Full-time.
What does the A level include?
The AS (Year 1) includes 2 units:
Ø Unit 1A Personal response to and evaluation of live theatre seen during the course.
            1B Study and interpretation of a chosen set text: Antigone, by Sophocles.

Ø Unit 2 Performance of an extract from a published play, together with presentation of preparation and development work and supporting notes.  Interpretation of the extract should show evidence of being influenced by a significant theatre practitioner or theatre company studied.

The A2, (Year 2) includes 2 more units which are more demanding and intensify the knowledge, understanding and skills developed by students.
 
Ø Unit 3 Study of 2 further set texts from 2 different time periods: Pre-Twentieth Century and Twentieth Century or Contemporary Drama. In Section A students answer 1 question from a choice on each text and use a performance perspective.
In Section B students answer a single compulsory question and have to offer a complete stage realisation of an extract from their chosen play text applying their knowledge and experience from across the course.

Ø Unit 4  Development and Performance of a piece of Devised Drama, together with presentation of preparation and development work and supporting notes.
 What do I need to get onto it?
To study 3 AS levels, you need to have 5 GCSEs grades A-C (obtained in one sitting).
To study 4 AS levels, you need to have 6 GCSEs grade A-C (obtained in one sitting).
What type of assessment will be used?
AS (Year 1) Unit 1 is tested by a 1 hour 30 minutes written examination and Unit 2 by a performance of the play extract plus presentation of supporting notes.
A2 (Year 2) Unit 3 is tested by a 2 hour written examination and Unit 4 by the practical performance of the devised piece plus presentation of supporting notes.  
What else can I study?
Other A level subjects which are particularly suitable in combination with this include: English, Art, Film or Communication Studies and History.
