What is an Apprenticeship?
It is a work-based learning programme designed around the needs of employers, to build skills and develop the workforce. It leads to nationally recognised qualifications. Apprenticeships differ from more traditional qualifications as learners are principally assessed in the workplace and via a portfolio of evidence on their ability to do the job, rather than by means of examinations.
Framework/Structure
All apprentices follow an ‘Apprenticeship Framework’, which consists of three main parts:
- Functional skills– English and Maths
- Technical qualification - theory
- NVQ/QCF – Occupational Qualification
- To succeed in an Apprenticeship, the apprentice must pass every section of the framework.
Qualifications OfferedWe offer a range of apprenticeships in both Level 2 & Level 3.

Who are Apprenticeships for?
They are designed for anyone aged 16 years and over, who is not currently in full-time education and is a UK resident. Funding restrictions do apply to people aged over 24 years. There are no formal entry requirements, but Apprenticeships must take place in employment - so you need an employer who is willing to take you on as an apprentice and support you throughout the programme.
How long is the course?
An Apprenticeship with City of Westminster College lasts 12-24 months.
Where can It lead?
On completion of your Apprenticeship, you can carry on working as a qualified practitioner in your field, or progress to an advanced Apprenticeship (provided you achieve a level 2 qualification)
When is the next course?
Apprenticeships are run on a flexible basis, with multiple entry points throughout the year. If you want to become an apprentice, your course commences when an employer has an Apprenticeship vacancy and agrees to take you on.
