Apprenticeships - Good for Business
Have you considered hiring an apprentice or investing in an Apprenticeship for an existing member of staff? Apprenticeship training is available to employees of any age.
Apprenticeships are designed around employers’ needs and lead to nationally recognised qualifications for the apprentice, so everybody wins.
- 80% of companies that employ apprentices agree they make their workplace more productive
- 81% of consumers favour using a company which takes on apprentices
- Employers who have not taken on an apprentice in the last year and who employ less than 1000 employees, are eligible for a £1500 grant for taking on an apprentice between 16 and 24 years of age
- Over 100,000 employers offer Apprenticeship places in hundreds of different job roles across a wide range of industry sectors
- 88% of employers who employ apprentices believe that Apprenticeships lead to a more motivated and satisfied workforce
- 83% of employers who employ apprentices rely on Apprenticeship training to provide the skilled workers that they need for the future
Training normally takes place in a mixture of your workplace and the College but in some cases, all training is provided in the workplace with visiting tutors.
The training focuses on improving knowledge and skills so that the apprentice becomes a real asset to you. It is made up of:
- The Competence element (often an NVQ), which will enable the apprentice to demonstrate your workplace abilities and prove that you can do specific job-related tasks.
- The Technical certificate will give the apprentice extra knowledge and understanding about the job they are training for.
- Functional Skills cover more general work-related skills such as communication and numeracy
- ERR – Employee Rights and Responsibilities. In this part of the Apprenticeship they will learn about their rights and responsibilities in the workplace.
- PLTS – Personal Learning and Thinking Skills. This includes skills such as creative thinking, evaluation and team working which are key to making apprentices more effective employees.
Apprenticeship Training is at 3 levels and the level taken depends on prior qualifications or experience and the job role.
