City of Westminster College’s Paddington Green Campus offers an outstanding teaching and learning environment within an exceptional seven-storey building. A flagship for Further Education in London and the Region, the £102 million campus was designed by award-winning architects schmidt hammer lassen.
Designed for 21st Century teaching and learning, the innovative stepped design respects the nearby listed buildings and integrates with its location overlooking two of West London’s precious green spaces – Paddington Green at the southern end of the building and St Mary’s Gardens on the western side.
The feeling of openness and light extends to internal spaces, with a light-filled atrium at the heart of the building. The striking main entrance – with foyer artwork by Lothar Götz – enables the public to access the ground floor café with views overlooking the surrounding green spaces. This space also provides easy access to the 140-seat Sarah Siddons Theatre, which will include some public performances and events.
Flexible and sustainable design
Sustainable features have been incorporated throughout the building to minimise power use and impact on the local environment. Maximising natural light, and with a mix of accessible and ‘green’ roof terraces, the building enables students and staff to access outside space for study or relaxation.
The building’s airy first-floor Learning Resource Centre features floor-to-ceiling windows, providing panoramic views over St Mary’s Gardens. Open-plan areas throughout the building provide opportunities to work individually or in small groups, with our high speed wireless network providing easy access to online resources from anywhere on Campus.
Energy efficient features
The Paddington Green Campus is designed to be energy efficient, with low maintenance liabilities to significantly reduce building lifespan costs and carbon footprint.
Light - façades minimise solar gain to create a light and open environment. Full storey translucent fins provide external solar shading on the east and west façades. The stepped and cantilevered south façade provides solar shading and a large ETFE air cushion covers the atrium at roof level, providing insulation.
Energy - the building’s high thermal mass acts as a buffer, regulating internal temperatures throughout the year. A combined Heat and Power unit was chosen as energy source for the building.
Water - the building features rainwater harvesting, using green roofs to help retain rainwater, with grey recycled water used in the building.
Ventilation - the central atrium is naturally ventilated via a labyrinth at basement level, drawing fresh air from St Mary’s Gardens by utilising the stack effect at roof level.
Standards - the Campus was built in accordance with the GLA’s initiative to “Be Lean, Be Clean, Be Green”. Its M&E services design has followed the guidelines set out by BREEAM framework for the Further Education sector.
