Media lecturer gets rave reviews for new photography book

City of Westminster College Media Lecturer Sue Venables is the author of a new book focusing on practical and imaginative projects for digital SLR camera owners.

Sue, who has a career background in TV production, teaches video and photography editing at the College. She came up with the idea after friends asked her for advice on how to make the most of their digital SLR cameras.

Sue says: “I love photography, but know that many people are frightened to experiment and there’s quite a step up from ‘point and shoot’ to more complex techniques. The idea came about because I wanted to encourage people to experiment and be playful – creating a similar feel to a recipe book with practical projects at different skill levels and clear step-by-step instructions.”

With her ideas in place, Sue had no problem finding a publisher. She says: “It was actually remarkably easy as I was talking to a friend of a friend who works in publishing and showed her ideas I happened to have on a USB stick. A couple of months later she called to say they’d like to go ahead with the book.”

Photocrafty, published by Punk Publishing, contains 75 projects, including portraits, still life, landscapes and easy photo effects. It’s available on Amazon – where it has received rave reviews and is currently the bestselling digital photography for beginners book – and also in Urban Outfitters. You can also check out Sue’s photography website.
