Students explore careers in finance at City workshops
City of Westminster College A-level and Access to Higher Education Diploma students have explored career pathways in finance at two recent workshops, organised by Brokerage Citylink through the College’s Careers Advice team.

The workshops took place in the City and brought students from London colleges and schools together with executives from law firm Edwards Angell Palmer & Dodge and investment bank, UBS Asset Management. The students gained insights into the varied roles available in the finance sector and found out what it’s like to work in the City – as well as accessing expert advice on issues such as CV writing, interview skills and acquiring relevant work experience.

Participating in practical skills identification sessions, similar to those used by UBS Investment Bank in its recruitment assessment process, gave the students a clear insight into their own aptitude for finance roles and the skills they need to acquire to succeed. The Trading Game was another highlight of the workshop, with groups of students competing against each other to make a profit by investing a virtual £10,000 in stocks and commodities in a market simulation exercise. City of Westminster College groups achieved 2nd and 3rd places at the event – a great result under pressure!

Feedback was extremely positive, with one City of Westminster College student describing the workshop as: “very informative about the things we need to do in order to get a job in the City.”

City of Westminster College Careers Adviser Yvonne Nelson says: “These workshops were really worthwhile and enjoyable sessions, showing our students the wide variety of roles available and also highlighting ways in which they can acquire knowledge and experience to build a rewarding career path in a finance environment.”
Brokerage Citylink is an independent not-for-profit organisation, set up to integrate City employers with inner-city students - raising awareness and aspirations among students by showing potential career paths, as well as helping organisations gain access to a diverse pool of talented young people.

City of Westminster College’s full-time team of Careers Advisers offer information and guidance, as well as assisting students and potential students to decide on training and employment routes to suit their career and life goals. Careers advice is available through the Information and Advice Centre at the College’s Paddington Green Campus.
