Lord Mayor of Westminster attends A Level art show
Lord Mayor of Westminster Councillor Judith Warner was among the visitors to City of Westminster College’s A level art show, held at Maida Vale Centre recently.

Attending in her capacity as Lord Mayor, Councillor Judith Warner was also able to cast an expert eye over the student portfolios on display because she is a former Lecturer in Three Dimensional Design and has served as Board Member of the Institute of Contemporary Arts. The Lord Mayor is currently a Member of the Court of the Royal College of Art.

As well as viewing the artworks on display, she spent some time chatting to students about their portfolios, their inspirations and their future ambitions.

Councillor Judith Warner says: "I was most impressed with the quality of the students' work, they were clearly very enthusiastic about their studies and there was a stunning diversity of art on display. The students with whom I spoke had a grasp of the technical and artistic background of their work and, importantly, were confident about how they intended to develop their technique in their further studies".

Lecturer Brian Sayers, who teaches A level Art at the College and organises the show each year, says: “The ambition of these students has been remarkable - as has their engagement with art - and their work promises to produce good grades. They have all worked incredibly hard and been consistent, so this has been an excellent showcase for their very individual approaches”.

City of Westminster College has a range of highly regarded art and design courses. Alongside AS and A2 level Art, it offers BTEC First Diplomas in Art & Design and Digital Design and a BTEC National Diploma in Art & Design with the chance to specialise in Photography, Interactive Graphics, Animation or Fashion & Textiles.

The A level art show is held annually and displays the portfolios of AS and A2 students. With a focus on multi media, students display coursework in a variety of mediums including drawing, painting and collage. Traditionally the art show has taken place at Maida Vale Centre but from 2011 it will be at the new £102m campus on Paddington Green, which has enhanced public access, performance and display spaces.
