Lord Sebastian Coe was the keynote speaker at the launch of MODNet, the Middlesex
Organisational Development Network, held at Middlesex University’s flagship Hendon campus.
MODNet is a major initiative to promote nationwide opportunities for business and career development. It was created by specialist teams at Middlesex University and is supported by a network of 13 partner organisations, including City of Westminster College. Partners will provide specialist learning and training programmes to help employers develop expertise and potential within their workforce.
Lord Coe spoke about career change in the light of his own diverse experience – switching from athletics to politics and then to his current role. He told his audience that blending previous experience with new learning can result in huge strides in career development. He said: “You cling to the experiences you have had in the workplace when you change career”.
Lord Coe also spoke of the value of nurturing team work and talent for success, adding: “As Chairman of the Olympic bid I surrounded myself with talented people…I wanted to be brave enough to do the bid differently from previous British bids”.
Professor Margaret House, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic at Middlesex University spoke about the long-term value of learning in the workplace. She said: “We see Work Based Learning going from strength to strength through MODNet, providing opportunities for businesses to capitalise on employee knowledge and expertise.
“Many organisations have been badly affected by the current recession, but as Lord Coe has said, having a vision is crucial in helping organisations to survive such difficult times. Investing in employees’ learning and training is a long-term strategy that can bring far-reaching results”.
Suzanne Overton-Edwards, Vice-Principal for Innovation, Business and Community Partnerships at City of Westminster College, said: “The College is proud to be a partner in MODNet and fully supports its aims. We are committed to supporting employers in identifying and implementing business solutions through the development of their workforce.
“What is unique about MODNet is that it provides a ‘one-stop shop’ service for employers, enabling them to receive advice, guidance and training at all levels”.
