Colleges new Paddington Green Campus wins second major architecture award
City of Westminster College Paddington Green Campus is among the winners of the inaugural New London Awards.

The awards, which are presented by NLA (New London Architecture), celebrate the capital’s best schemes and the new College Campus was honoured under the Learning category at a ceremony held at the Guildhall last week.

This is the second major architecture award for Paddington Green Campus. The Royal Institute of British Architects announced in May that the Campus was among the 2011 RIBA Award winners for London.

The New London Awards received 316 entries from across London, and a total of 23 prizes were awarded in 12 categories. Other winning schemes include the London 2012 Olympic Velodrome and Barking Central regeneration scheme.

The distinguished jury included The Financial Times Architecture & Design Critic Edwin Heathcote, New York City Department of Design and Construction Commissioner David J. Burney and Edinburgh City Council City Design Leader Riccardo Marini. The jury was supported by a panel of expert assessors, including Conran & Partners Director Nigel Lea, DPP Head of Heritage & Design Emma Adams and The Olympic Delivery Authority Principal Design Advisor Kay Hughes.

NLA Chairman and chair of the awards jury Peter Murray, said: "We have sought to reward not only excellence in design but also to recognise architecture that complements the surrounding city. The New London Awards are about buildings that sit comfortably with their neighbours and adjacent spaces and the strength of the winners is remarkable.”

The £102m Paddington Green Campus was designed by schmidt hammer lassen architects and opened in January 2011. Overlooking the Conservation Area of Paddington Green and St Mary’s Gardens, the Campus features superb facilities including specialist workshops and laboratories, dedicated meeting and IT spaces, a Sport England- specification sports hall, dance studio and gym/fitness suite and the professional quality Sarah Siddons Theatre.
