City of Westminster College ITQ student Morteza Moosavinejad has achieved a Bronze award in the finals of the WorldSkills UK Web Design Competition, achieving marks of 80.95 out of 100 in the Advanced category.
The Advanced category comprised entrants who are working towards a Level 3 qualification or have up to five-years’ career experience in ITQ. With this score, Morteza may be selected to move on to represent the UK at an international WorldSkills competition.
Morteza, who has been studying at the College for the past three years and hopes to go on to university this autumn, had to create a website from scratch and in a highly-testing ‘live’ environment over the two days of the final. He was judged on areas such as storyboard, graphics, animation and navigation – as well as the overall quality of the completed site.
Before making it to the finals Morteza had successfully made it through the first heat by designing an entertainment website and submitting it to WorldSkills UK for appraisal.
Moreteza, 20, who lives in Brent says: “I’m really happy with the results of the competition. The entries were whittled down from 170 people to 18 people in the National Final. They made us compete live in order to judge how we coped under pressure when people were watching us. Now the next stage is for them to look at winners’ marks and also assess personality and ability to cope at international stage via an interview”.
WorldSkills UK are competitions held annually that aim to encourage people to excel in their vocational skill. Some competitors are then selected to represent the UK at WorldSkills International competitions. Formerly known as the ‘skills olympics, the competitions bring together the ‘best of the best’ from a range of nations and in vocational areas as diverse as bricklaying, aeronautical engineering, robotics, hairdressing and floristry. The World Finals of WorldSkills International takes place at ExCeL, London in October 2011.
