College is co-founder of innovative apprenticeship scheme for London
Friday saw the official launch of the London Apprenticeship Company (LAC), an exciting initiative to boost the number of apprentices in the capital. Skills Minister Lord Young attended the showcase event in Westminster, which was also open to students and potential employers.

This not-for-profit Group Apprenticeship organisation will become a direct employer to apprentices aged 16-25. LAC will be responsible for apprentices’ pay, probationary reviews, training and pastoral care – taking on the administrative burden for business and making apprenticeships a viable option for many more small and medium sized companies.

As original proposer of the scheme and one of the founding members of LAC, City of Westminster College has helped develop a structure and delivery mechanism based on a successful Australian model. As a key provider for LAC, City of Westminster College will offer apprenticeships in areas such as business administration, construction, retail and social care.

Historically London accounts for only 6 per cent of the national total of apprenticeships – one third of the level of, for instance, the North East, so this initiative will provide a welcome boost to business and increase career opportunities for London’s young people.

In addition to providing administration, pay and management support, LAC will provide a career mentor for every apprentice on the scheme, enabling and encouraging young people to reach their goals.

Lord Young said: “The Group Apprenticeship model has been very attractive to employers in Australia for many years and has clearly contributed to the success of apprenticeships there.

"I believe the establishment of the London Apprenticeship Company is a key step in increasing apprenticeship numbers in London and is part of this Government’s overall commitment to increasing apprenticeships nationwide.”

LAC Chief Executive Peter Harlock said: "This programme will be a very attractive option to businesses in London because it simplifies the process and lowers the risk of taking on junior staff for companies in these difficult times.

"There are more than 150 companies in Australia that have successfully developed this model and we firmly believe we can replicate this success in London."

City of Westminster College Principal Robin Shreeve said: “This opens up exciting career routes for the many young people who want to combine work with training.

“LAC addresses vital skills requirements for businesses in the capital and offers young people opportunities to gain valuable skills within the workplace. City of Westminster College is proud to be involved in the development and delivery of this exciting apprenticeship programme.”
