College Sounds at Carnival
It’s one of the biggest festivals in the UK and in 2006 City of Westminster College was right there providing some cool sounds.

On the 27th and 28th August over a million revellers walked the streets of West and North-West London and, because City of Westminster College is such a big part of this community we decided to join in the fun! The College sponsored a Static Sound System on Portobello Road, just 30 metres from the Carnival procession called ‘High on Hope’. This particular sound system has been at the Carnival for many years and is renowned for supporting new talent. Of course City of Westminster fully endorse this ethos and we were more than happy to get our students involved. In fact, two of the six DJs that played to the crowds over the weekend were our very own Sound Engineering and Music Technology students, Michael Biango and Don Nelson.

On Sunday, Michael played on his own, attracting a very dense crowd and kept us dancing for a full hour. People were literally cheering for him to get back on stage when the hour was up. Don Nelson joined us on Monday. He already has a DJ residency at The Grand Union in Camden and, together with Michael showed everyone how it should be done. They did the College proud and if you were there you know why.

Due to his success on both days, Michael was approached by an events coordinator and invited to play a few nights in clubs around London. Don just passed his BTEC National Diploma in Sound Engineering with three distinctions and is going to the University of Surrey to study a Degree in Music with Computer Sound Design. We wish them both the best of luck and give them our continued support for their future careers in the music industry.
