City of Westminster College students Mehdi Sallah and Emmanual Imagoro were among the speakers at the Ministry of Defence (MOD) Education Outreach Programme’s annual awards ceremony, held at MOD headquarters in Whitehall. They were representing a group of 11 Level 2 National Certificate in Business students from the College who had participated in the MOD’s Education Outreach programme.
The year-long Programme included mentoring via email by MOD staff, teambuilding sessions and the chance to tour MOD headquarters, visit their mentors and see the challenges and opportunities of working in a large Central London workplace. In addition, MOD staff were able to support modules the students were taking by providing specialist talks on Human Resources topics.
The awards ceremony and celebration drew students from across London who have participated in the Programme. Special guests included Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence Sir Bill Jeffrey KCB, and Chief Executive of the Association of Colleges Martin Doel.
City of Westminster College’s speakers at the awards Mehdi and Emmanual told the audience about their year’s involvement with the Outreach Programme and had the opportunity to thank the MOD for the support they had provided to the Level 2 group in both their studies and personal development.
Head of the Education Outreach Programme Andy Gillman MBE said: “The MOD Education Outreach Programme has now been supporting college students across London for eight years, and City of Westminster College has been with us for most of those years. The Programme continues to expand and it is a real delight to support your students each year and see them progress with their careers.”
City of Westminster College Business and Community Studies Lecturer Cynthia Garnett said: “The MOD’s Education Outreach Programme is an opportunity to be mentored by highly skilled professionals over a long period of time and gain experience of how the public sector functions. This is a valuable opportunity that many young people would simply not be able to access without the Programme. We are grateful to the MOD and Andy Gillman for the work they do to enhance our students’ careers and contribute to their personal development.”
