We at City of Westminster College are always proud of the achievements of our students and at our Annual Student Awards Evening we get the opportunity to give special acknowledgment to just a few of our students who have attained excellence, often in the face of difficult personal times. One student from each school of study within the College was selected by tutors, which meant that a total of 17 students received awards. A further 4 special awards were also given; the Principal's Award, which was given to Marciana Sy, the Governor's Award given to Natalie Blake and two NUS Awards, which were presented to Maha Samhat and Latisha Hewitt by our special guest speaker, Ellie Russell, Vice-President of the National Union of Students (FE).
At the start of the evening we showcased some of the visual material produced by our students over the passed year in a short show reel, which was followed by 'Talking Heads' footage of 5 award winners commenting on the college and their positive experiences during their time of study. The evening's programme kicked off with an extracted performance of 'Swan Lake' by our BTEC National Diploma in Dance students.
Our special guest speaker Ellie Russell was an ex-student from a Further Education college. She finished her A-Levels in English and Drama in June at Haywards Heath College where she was Student Union President and a Governor on the College Corporation and curriculum committee. Last year she was the Further Education (FE) South East Representative on National Council, sat on the Year of Change Group and was an NUS FE advocate.
This year as Vice President FE, Ellie is coordinating the NUS strategy on Further Education, which includes campaigns, training and development. She also co-convenes the Student Union Development campaign, has responsibility for working with the British Youth Council and sits on the Education and Anti Racism/Anti Fascism teams.
Each student receiving an award has a biography of their time at the college, written by their tutors. If you would like to see the award winners and their biographies
