City of Westminster College is celebrating Adult Learners’ Week by profiling students who are succeeding with us. Today we focus on a student who combined youth work with a College course, and proved to be so outstandingly successful that he won an award and opened up a whole new career path.
Levi Miller, 30, was already employed as a youth worker when he decided to return to College to acquire qualifications to back up his experience. Levi says: “I began as a volunteer – I got into it through coaching basketball – and discovered I was good at it. From there it went from strength to strength. I was working at Four Feathers Youth Club in Marylebone when it was decided that the team should get some paperwork, so we joined the NVQ 2 Youth Work course at City of Westminster College.”
Levi proved to have outstanding aptitude for the course and impressed his tutors with his self-direction and autonomy. Not only did he win a Student Award for his efforts, but the outstanding portfolio he prepared to support his NVQ qualification is now used as an example to show others what to aim for.
The NVQ course also opened up fresh opportunities - a period of work experience with the College led permanent work. Now Levi combines his daytime role as a Student Enrichment Worker here at City of Westminster College with work at Four Feathers Youth Club in the evenings.
His advice to other adults considering returning to education is to think big. Levi says: “Hang on to your dreams because they are always possible and you can achieve anything. Getting some paperwork to back up your experience opens doors, but more than that, learning as an adult is about taking time out for yourself.”
City of Westminster College has a long-established City & Guilds-accredited NVQ Assessment Centre and also offers a wide variety of other course options to help you progress your career or develop your workforce. Contact the
