What does the course include?
The HND Applied Biology includes a number of modules produced by Edexcel. Study of these modules will provide the student with good conceptual understanding of applied aspects of biology which are designed to prepare students for a career in applied biology fields. This course has been introduced at City of Westminster College to provide a progression route in non-medical / non-health careers. However the qualification is broadly recognised and the fundamental nature of the modules studied mean that this qualification could also be used to enter science-based posts with the health sector.
What do you need to get on to the course?
The HND in Applied Biology is a higher education course. Therefore students are required to be able to evidence achievement at level 2 literacy and level 2 numeracy; this is the equivalent level of GCSE. In addition students would normally be expected to be able to evidence successful study on a level 3 programme and the right to study within the UK.
The interview process
Students will be required to attend an interview prior to being accepted onto the course. This will take a semi-structured approach where set questions are asked of applicants. Answers provided by candidates may then be followed up with further questioning. This is a general interview to assess interest and suitability for the course. During the interview course information will also be provided and the applicant will be given the opportunity to ask questions about the HND Applied Biology programme.
How is the course assessed?
Assessment for this programme reflects its applied nature and application to industry. Students are therefore assessed using a variety of methods which include practical skills and written assessments. Written assessments may take the form of examinations and coursework, including longer pieces of work such as projects. Other forms of assessment may also be used such as work place assessment and presentations.
Where does it lead?
Students gaining a HND in Applied Biology can seek employment in science related industries. For example the pharmaceutical industry, food manufacturing, biotechnology, microbiological monitoring for quality purposes.
Where is it based?
This course will be delivered in the classrooms and science laboratories based at the Paddington Green campus of the City of Westminster College.
Accommodation
The College does not have in-house accommodation but the student advisory service can assist in support with accommodation.

Other information
This is an ideal course for students are seeking an immediate employment in industry rather than electing to study a three year degree programme. The course is also suitable for students who have achieved less UCAS points than might be required to gain entry onto a BSc programme or for adults without a range of qualifications seeking to return to education after gaining experience in industry. The first year of the HND in Applied Biology may be studied alone to achieve a HNC. A HNC is also an excellent programme for students who may have studied alternative subjects previously but who have now decided to change careers and enter the science field.
Validation
This course is validated by Edexcel.
