Photography at City of Westminster College

We are a leading centre for Photography training in central London, offering opportunities from beginner courses up to industry-recognised professional qualifications.

Expertise and facilities

Photography has been a City of Westminster College specialism for over 50 years. We’ve helped students to build careers in architectural, fine art, forensic and medical photography. We count successful advertising, documentary/news and fashion photographers among our alumni.

As a student with us, you benefit from superb contemporary workspaces, including purpose-built daylight photography studios and digital imaging facilities. We are one of the few London colleges to maintain wet darkrooms – enabling you to develop traditional craft and fine art techniques, alongside expertise with the latest digital technologies.

Professional training

Our lecturers are practitioners in the field, with many years’ experience of working in industry and teaching to graduate/professional level. Many of our students are already working in the creative industries.

Our department is an affiliate of the Association of Photographers (AoP), an internationally recognised membership organisation, and we offer AoP-affiliated HND in Photography and Foundation Degree in Professional Photography courses.

As part of professional-level training, you benefit from practical and career-focused talks and workshops, including AoP-led seminars on managing the current and future copyright (ownership) of your work.

Creative opportunities

Our practice-led approach gives you opportunities to develop your talent and build a solid portfolio. We support your development and encourage you to promote your work and build vital contacts for your future career.

Alongside College exhibitions, our students participate in major shows, including Free Range – the UK’s largest public showcase of graduate talent. Our students’ work has won prizes in major competitions, including the Sony World Photography Awards 2013 and the Fujifilm Student Awards 2011.

Free Range is held yearly in East London's Brick Lane and features the work of our Photography students.
