Who is the course for?

This course is for 16-18 year olds who are interested in working in Child Care or Health and Social Care. The course is also designed to help you improve your English language skills.

What does the course include?

You will complete taster vocational units for courses that are offered at a higher level at the college in Child Care or Health and Social Care, the taster units include:

  • Communicating with children and adults
  • Health and Social Care needs
  • Healthy Eating
  • Creative activities for children

The course will also include Functional skills in:

  • English
  • Maths
  • ICT

You will also receive:

  • 1-2-1 Tutorials
  • Career advice.

How is the course assessed?

You will have to produce a portfolio of coursework for your vocational work, this will include written, verbal and photographic evidence.

Functional skills will be assessed with an exam.

What can Learners do after completion of the course?

This course will prepare you to progress onto a higher course in health and social care/ child care, or onto an apprenticeship, An excellent tutor recommendation on your attendance, punctuality and behaviour is also taken into account.

What is needed to get on the course?

You will be interviewed to see if you have an interest in child care and health and social care and in developing your English skills. You will also need a good reference from school, connexions or employment. You will take an English and maths assessment and to get on the course the results from the assessments should be:

  • Low - Level 1
  • High - Entry 3

The levels are:

  • Level 2 – GCSE
  • Level 1

  • Entry 1
  • Pre-Entry
