Course content

There are twelve units to complete over the two years:

  • Health, Safety and Welfare in Construction and the Built Environment
  • Sustainable Construction
  • Mathematics in Construction and the Built Environment
  • Science and Materials in Construction and the Built Environment
  • Construction Technology and Design in Construction and Civil Engineering
  • Surveying in Construction and Civil Engineering
  • Construction in Civil Engineering
  • Graphical Detailing in Construction and the Built Environment
  • Structural Mechanics in Construction and Civil Engineering
  • CAD & design for Construction
  • Further Mathematics in Construction and the Built Environment
  • Project in Construction and the Built Environment

Successful learners achieve the Subsidiary Diploma at the end of the first year. The full Diploma is claimed at the end of the second year.

Outline of skills and knowledge

The focus is on developing skills in design, analysis and evaluation across a range of Civil Engineering topics.

What have students who have taken this course in the past progressed to?

Candidates achieving Merit or Distinction are invited to enrol on our HNC Civil Engineering programme. 

How will I learn?

The course is predominantly classroom based with a focus on theoretical knowledge and understanding. 

How will I be assessed?

Centre devised assignments are mostly used to continuously assess over the two years. In addition there are occasional open-book class based tests. 

How much time should I be expected to spend on assignments, projects, field trips etc

Learners can expect to be working on at least one assignment or project at any one time throughout the two years. 

Which awarding body is the course validation by?

EdExcel 

What qualifications or skills do I need to show I have before I can enrol?

You must be employed in the construction or built environment sectors.

Expected prior knowledge

No prior knowledge is required but in reality candidates possess skills and experiences from their working environment. 

English level

Level 2 English Language e.g. GCSE A*-C (B or above is preferred).

Mathematics level

Level 2 Mathematics e.g. GCSE A*-C (B or above is preferred).

There are no equipment costs for this course.

Fees shown are set against the current year (August 2015 to July 2016) and are subject to change when Government funding changes are announced.

All our full time further education courses (Entry to Level 3) are free if you are 16-18 years old and meet UK residency requirements. Depending on your circumstances, you may also be eligible for financial support to help with other costs associated with your course such as free school meals and travel.

If you are  enrolling onto a Level 3 or 4 course and aged 19 or over, you may be required to pay fees depending on your residency status, educational background and personal circumstances.
