What does the course include?

This course covers four areas of Building Services Engineering;

  • Plumbing
  • Electrical installation
  • Heating, ventilation and air-conditioning
  • Refrigeration

This course is ideal for 16-18 students or adults thinking about a career in buildings services engineering - perhaps maintaining air conditioners or working as an electrician or a plumber.

What do you need to get on to the course?

You need a good basic understanding of the building services industry - enough to choose a career path and move on to your next qualification. Candidates should have evidence of at least Level 1 qualifications in Mathematics and English. Selection is by interview.

How is the course assessed?

You'll be assessed on your practical skills and the knowledge you gain, perhaps by completing practical tasks or written assignments.

Where does it lead?

These qualifications don't lead directly to a job, but they prepare you to start other qualifications.

After taking another qualification, you could choose to work as:

  • an electrician
  • a plumber
  • a heating and ventilating engineer
  • an air conditioning engineer.
You can use the units from your Certificate or Diploma to get a head start on these NVQ Level 2 Diplomas:
  • Installing, Testing and Maintaining Air Conditioning Systems (6187-01)
  • Installing and Maintaining Refrigeration Systems (6187-02)
  • Heating & Ventilating - Industrial & Commercial Installation (6188-01)
  • Heating & Ventilating - Service and Maintenance (6188-02)
  • Heating & Ventilating - Ductwork Installation (6188-03)
  • Plumbing and Heating (6189-01)
  • Domestic Heating (6189-11).

you move on to these NVQ Diplomas - but the units from your Certificate or Diploma don't count towards them.

  • Electrotechnical Services (Electrical Maintenance) Level 3  (2357-13)
  • Installing Electrotechnical Systems and Equipment (Buildings and Structures) Level 3 (2357-23)
