What does the course include?

The course is designed to be the first year of a three-year construction pathway leading to candidates achieving industry standard qualifications in specific areas such as site carpentry or plastering.

This qualification has been designed to help learners understand aspects of the construction industry and the skills required to work successfully in the industry. Units covered include Carpentry & Joinery, Construction Painting, Building Maintenance, Plumbing Skills and Electrical Installation Skills.

Learners also have the opportunity to develop their functional skills in English and Mathematics.

What do you need to get on the course?

Entry requirements: GCSE grades E or above in Mathematics and English Language and a satisfactory school reference.

The interview process

A successful interview is an essential part of the selection process. Candidates must bring a school reference and qualification certificates to the interview. 

How is the course assessed?

The majority of construction units are assessed through practical work carried out in workshops. A few units require written coursework.

Where does it lead?

From September 2012 we will offer 3-year pathways in Construction (Carpentry, Painting & Decorating, and Plastering etc) and Building Services Engineering (Plumbing, Electrical Installation etc).

In year 1 both pathways start with courses that cover a range of trade disciplines. In year 2 you choose which specific area you wish to specialise in. In year 3 you can choose to develop your skills to an industry standard level.
