What does it include?

In this course you will grow your Diploma. This means starting at the Certificate and then building your way up. This means that you will study 3 units at a time in this order:

• Energy and Our Universe
• Biology and Our Environment
• Chemistry and Our Earth
• Certificate achieved
• The Living Body
• Chemical analysis and detection
• Exploring Our Universe
• Extended certificate achieved
• Investigating a Crime Scene
• Practical Scientific Project
• Diploma Achieved

How is the course assessed?

An overall grade of Pass, Merit or Distinction will be awarded for the course.

All units are assessed internally by means of assignments, which are often based on laboratory practical work, and assessment tests; these are then externally moderated by Edexcel.

What do I need to get on to it?

You need to be have obtained a minimum of 2 GCSEs at D grade including science and 2 GCSEs at E grade in relevant subjects. However, acceptance onto the course will also depend on your demonstrating an acceptable level of competence in English language and Maths by completing an initial assessment. Overseas students who have not taken GCSEs will be assessed for entry by means of written tests in English and Maths. Support classes will be recommended for those students who need to improve their language or numeracy skills in order to benefit from the course.

Where will it lead?

This is a full time Level 2 Applied Science qualification equivalent to 4 GCSE’s at grade A* - C.

It provides a good foundation in science and a progression route into the Level 3 vocational science programme such as the extended Diploma in Forensic Science or the Extended Diploma in Medical Science, for which an overall Merit grade is required. ​
