What does it include?

In Biology GCSE you will study the structure, functions, diversity and interactions of living organisms, and the impact of humans on the environment, also some aspects of genetics and biotechnology. You will investigate How science Works, and be able to apply your knowledge to understanding biological issues in the news such as stem cell research and MRSA.

You will study the AQA GCSE Biology 4411 syllabus

How is the course assessed?

Assessment consists of three 45 minute theory exams on Units 1,2 and 3 respectively plus an ISA (Investigative Skills Assignment) which is based on laboratory practical work.

Students are entered at either the Foundation level (max grade C) or Higher level (max grade A*), according to their progress during the year.

What do I need to get on to it?

For 16-18 year olds you need at least 5 grade Ds (in relevant subjects) and a good school record. Applicants who have not taken GCSEs must pass subject based college diagnostic tests.

The evening GCSE biology course can be studied as a single subject GCSE and is aimed at mature students. Applicants are expected to have achieved at least at Level 1 in English and Numeracy. Students who have no formal qualifications in English will be required to pass the College diagnostic language test.

Where does it lead?

Students who meet both the general and subject specific entry criteria and who have a good college record may progress to A levels in separate sciences or Applied Science . ​
