What does the A-level include?

The AS includes three units: The Core Principles of Chemistry, Application of Core Principles of Chemistry, and Chemistry Laboratory Skills.

In A2 we look at building on your AS knowledge, through three extra units: General principles of Chemistry I-Rates, General :Principles of Chemistry II - Transition Metals and Organic Nitrogen Chemistry and Chemistry Laboratory Skills II.

How will I be assessed?

We follow the Edexcel syllabus (8CHO1) and (9CHO1). The AS comprises of two written papers and three practical assessments carried out under timed supervision. The A2 also comprises of two written papers and three practical assessments carried out under timed supervision.

What qualifications do I need to get onto the A-level?

Apart from the general entry criteria for A-levels, you must have Grade B in GCSE Maths plus either BB in Core/Additional Science or Grade B in GCSE Chemistry

What else can I study?

A-level Chemistry can be studied as part of a three or four A-level package. It is recommended that it is studied with Biology, Physics or Maths. If you would like to study a medical related topic at university you should also apply for A level Biology and Chemistry and another academic subject is often needed.

Where can this course lead me?

This course will enable you to progress to university. Chemistry is an essential requirement for degrees in a range of Chemistry courses; Pharmacy; Medicine; Dentistry; and other medical or science subjects.
