Learning for Living 


The course includes:

 
· Induction
·Tutoring programme including Personal, Social & Health Education
· Communication Skills
· Numeracy and Literacy
· Travel training and Community Awareness
· Cooking (including snack cookery)
· Options sessions in Drama, Art & Music 
·  Physical Education (sport, swimming, cycling) including Self Care
· IT

There is a focus on community participation, as such lots of lessons take place outside of the college building using local facilities such as Better Leisure Centres.

Course outline and what have students who have taken this course in the past progressed to?

Attending college helps young people move towards adult status. This course if for students who have severe learning disabilities. We will support students to make independent choices and develop their communication, independent, personal and social skills, whilst developing self-confidence and personal awareness. This will be achieved through the timetabled curriculum and by having the opportunity to mix with and be part of a very diverse college community. Some students progress onto our Preparing for Adulthood or Learning for Work courses.

How will I learn?

Students will receive a timetable outlining their weekly lessons - see example above. Lessons will include classroom work, practical activities with embedded literacy & numeracy skills and community based learning.

How will I be assessed?

All students will have Education Health and Care Plans on which their Individual Learning Plans will be based, these are regularly reviewed and updated.

Students will work towards ASDAN Entry Level qualifications in Personal Progress, which are individually chosen based on students aspirations.

Which awarding body is the course validation by?

ASDAN

Entrance Requirements: what qualifications or skills do I need to show I have before I can enrol?

Students must have an Education Health and Care Plan, but there are no formal entry requirements. We will assess applicants' learning support needs before deciding whether to offer a place.

The course includes:

· Circle time with sensory circuits

· Getting ready to learn yoga

· Intensive Interaction

· Communication Skills

· Rebound Therapy

·  Drama Therapy

· Sensory Stories

· Massage & Relaxation

· Travel within the community

· Community Awareness and participation

·  Cooking / food exploration

· Options sessions

· Physical Education (e.g. swimming, cycling) including Self Care


In addition students have access to the multisensory room, where they are supported to interact with a variety of sensory equipment.

Course outline and what have students who have taken this course in the past progressed to? 

Attending college helps young people move on from school. This course is for young adults who have complex learning disabilities, the majority of whom require one to one support. Students are exposed to and begin learning how to interact with others within a mainstream diverse college environment, develop their communication skills as well as access their local community on a more regular basis through the timetabled curriculum. Enabling students to access a wider range of opportunities and activities post college. 

How will I learn?

Students will receive a timetable outlining their weekly lessons. As can be seen from the sample timetable above lessons will include classroom work, community based learning and practical activities all with embedded literacy & numeracy skills.
