Documentary Film Making

This intensive three-session course will aim to provide students with a grounding of the technical and creative skills required to become a documentary filmmaker. From developing the idea through to shoot and edit, students with create a short documentary example.


Once familiarised with the equipment and theoretical issues surrounding film making, students will participate in the making of a short documentary using the college studios, grounds and other suitable locations.


All stages of the digital film production process will be covered, with every student taking on specific roles employed in the making of a documentary, including researcher, camera operator, editor etc. The documentary will be then by edited using Adobe Premiere Pro.


The course is ideal for those with little or no experience, or those wishing to brush up on their skills. It could act as a platform to take on more ambitious documentaries or other filmmaking projects.

Course Structure


Session 1            

Introduction & induction. Issues relating to documentaries. Styles and conventions. Writing a proposal. How to use a digital camera.  Effective lighting techniques. Preparing for the shoot. Crew roles and responsibilities. Location recce. Scheduling shoot. Interview techniques.


Session 2            

Filming the documentary.


Session 3            

Introduction to Adobe Premiere. First assembly. Cutting, trimming and fine cut. Export for screening.
