Will the course give me what I want?

Course content

You will take part in a variety of projects linked to Music performance through practical workshops, performances and rehearsals, recordings, lectures and classroom taught sessions as well as independent study. Topics may include Composition, Music Performance Techniques, Music Business, Listening Skills and Working as a Musical Ensemble.

The course is delivered as two one-year programmes:

Year 1 – Diploma

Year 2 – Extended Diploma

Students are expected to satisfactorily complete the Diploma programme in order to progress onto the Extended Diploma in the second year.

What have students who have taken this course in the past progressed to

Progression into Level 3 Music Production or Music Performance.

Apprenticeship programmes within the Creative Sector subject to successful applications. 

How will I learn?

You will learn through a variety of practical techniques classes, practical workshops, group seminars and lectures.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed continually through practical project work, coursework, written assignments and through giving presentations. Practical assessment will include some public performances but also in-class presentation and workshop assessment.

How much time should I be expected to spend on assignments, projects, field trips etc

6 – 8 hours per week of independent learning

What qualifications or skills do I need to show I have before I can enrol?

To be a successful applicant to our programmes in Sound & Music you should have the following qualifications:

· You will have a minimum 4 GCSEs at grade C or above, including English Language Or
· A Level 2 qualification at Merit or above with Functional Skills Literacy qualification at Level 2
· At interview you will need to demonstrate enthusiasm and commitment to this area.
· You will need to audition and perform a short piece on your chosen instrument to demonstrate your musical potential and ability.
· You will take an Initial Assessment at interview, which you will need to pass at Level 2 to gain access to the course

All courses are subject to a successful and positive reference from a previous tutor or employer.

Expected prior knowledge

Experience of music production or performance

English level

GCSE grade C

Mathematics l
evel

Level 2 Maths is desirable, but not essential.

Equipment and other costs

Access to your own instrument if you are a performer would be desirable.

* Fee information

Fees shown are set against the current year (August 2016 to July 2017) and are subject to change when Government funding changes are announced.

All our full time further education courses (Entry to Level 3) are free if you are 16-18 years old and meet UK residency requirements. Depending on your circumstances, you may also be eligible for financial support to help with other costs associated with your course such as free school meals and travel.

If you are enrolling onto a Level 3 or 4 course and aged 19 or over, you may be required to pay fees depending on your residency status, educational background and personal circumstances.
