Will the course give me what I want?

Course content

The course contains the following units: carpentry, joinery, construction decorating, electrical installation, plumbing, engineering components using hand tools and bench drills, mechanical engineering, electrical wiring, and making machined products.

What have students who have taken this course in the past progressed to?

Successful students with better than 90% attendance and at least Level 1 passes in both Mathematics and English can progress to Level 2 courses in Construction, Engineering, Electrical Installation or Plumbing.

How will I learn?

Nearly all your learning takes place in construction or engineering workshops. Your teachers will demonstrate the skills you need to learn and then under supervision you will practice those skills.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed by the practical work you carry out and the quality of the components and products you make. Most units will be assessed using one practical assignment.

How much time should I be expected to spend on assignments, projects, field trips etc.?

After a suitable amount of demonstration and teaching time about 50% of your time will be spent working individually or in small groups producing components and products in the workshops.

Employability skills visits will be organised during the year and some students may have the opportunity to take part in actual work experience.

Which awarding body is the course validation by?

The awarding body is Pearson Edexcel.

What qualifications or skills do I need to show I have before I can enrol?

You do not need any formal qualifications but you must show an interest in either construction or engineering related activities.

Expected prior knowledge

None

English level

You must have at least Entry Level 3 skills in English.

Mathematics level

You must have at least Entry Level 3 skills in Mathematics.

Depending on your circumstances, you may also be eligible for financial support to help with other costs associated with your course such as free school meals and travel.
