This qualification will enable the learner to develop the knowledge and skills needed when supporting teaching and learning in a school environment. It is made up of mandatory and optional units which are based on knowledge and skills. You will need to achieve 30 credits with 24 credits coming from the mandatory units. The remaining credits will be achieved from optional units.

How is the course assessed?

All units are internally assessed. Assessment enables the learner's workplace practice to provide evidence for individual units as well as the whole qualification. Methods of assessment could include: written assignments, direct observation of practice, professional discussion, reflections on own practice in the workplace and learner's own written records.

What do I need to get onto it?

You need a good standard of written English and will need to work as a teaching assistant for sixteen hours or more on a paid or voluntary basis. You will need to be released from your placement for one day a week to attend lessons. You will also need a clean CRB check to enable you to work with children.

Where does it lead?

This course leads to a nationally recognised qualification and possible employment in a school as a teaching assistant, learning support assistant or special educational needs assistant.
