Who is the course for?

This course is for 16-18 year olds who are interested in working in construction and want to develop skills in painting and decorating and joinery. The course is also designed to help you to improve your English language skills.

Edexcel

What does the course include?

You will complete taster vocational units for courses that are offered at a higher level at the college in Construction, the taster units include:

  • Painting Skills.
  • Joinery Skills
  • Decorating Skills
  • Plumbing Skills

The course is also designed to give extra support for you to improve their English skills to enable you to progress into employment on onto higher level courses.

You will also take Functional skills in:

  • English
  • Maths
  • ICT

and receive:

  • 1-2-1 Tutorials
  • Career advice.

How is the course assessed?

You will have to produce a portfolio of coursework for the vocational work, this will include written, verbal and photographic evidence.

Functional skills will be assessed with an exam.

What can Learners do after completion of the course?

This course will prepare you to progress onto professional courses at Level 1 or vocational courses at Level 2 in the future, depending on your achievement throughout the year. An excellent tutor recommendation on your attendance, punctuality and behaviour is also taken into account.

What is needed to get on the course?

You will be interviewed to see if you have an interest in construction, including painting, decorating, plumbing and carpentry and joinery and in developing your English and maths skills. You will also need a good reference from school, connexions or employment. You will take an English and maths assessment and to get on the course the results from the assessments should be:

  • Low - Level 1
  • High - Entry 3

The levels are:

  • Level 2 – GCSE
  • Level 1
  • Entry 3
  • Entry 2
  • Entry 1
