What does the A-level include?
You will develop your studio, darkroom, camera and digital skills in a variety of contexts, and learn how to convey your ideas visually and in writing using a specialist vocabulary. Over the year students will study towards 2 units, these are: Unit 1: Coursework which is 60% of grade Running from September to February and Unit 2 an externally assessed Assignment which is 40% of grade this runs from February to June, including an unaided exam piece that is made over an 8-hour period over 2 weeks. Students work towards a set theme in each unit. Students will research other photographers and artists, come up with ideas, map evidence of idea development, collect props, find locations, test ideas, experiment with techniques, materials and approaches, review results, direct final shoots, edit in Photoshop and manage high quality final printing and presentation. Students will fill an A4 sketchbook for each unit (as a minimum) and have a series of test and final prints to submit.
What do I need to get onto it?
Standard entry criteria to include grade C in GCSE Art-related subject or a portfolio and sketchbook work to be presented at interview. If you do not have any photography work or GCSE art you will be set a short assignment during the enrolment period to demonstrate your interest in the subject.
You will need to invest in some specialist equipment and be using digital and film SLR (single lens reflex) cameras. It is advantageous if students have their own camera, but we can provide kit to use on site and/or in local area. You should also be prepared to get the following items should you be successfully enrolled on the course: Two A4 Sketchbooks; Final high quality print tokens £10-£20; Laser print tokens £10; 35mm black and white film; 35mm negbag; A pack of 25 sheets 10x8” Black and White Ilford RC multigrade paper; Two simple A4 portfolios (something from Muji and or Rymans can work). If you have got one then a camera can help you generate more work, we recommend: Digital SLR camera (for example a Canon D1100) or SLR Film camera (For example a Pentax K1000) There will be more detailed advice on cameras if you decide to join the course. If you have any queries about the equipment you can contact the course tutor on email diane.bielik@cwc.ac.uk or phone 020 7258 2749.
What type of assessment will be used?
We work to the Edexcel exam board. This involves practical coursework, supervised exam and written work will be assessed according to Assessment Objectives.
What else can I study?
English, Media Studies, Sociology and History are particularly good combinations.
Where could it lead me?
