What does the A level include?

The AS (Year 1) includes 2 units:

  • The Exploration of Drama & Theatre
  • Theatre Text in Performance

The AS requires personal response to and evaluation of a range of live theatre experiences as seen during the course. There will be a practical exploration and written supporting analysis of two contrasting play texts and all students are practically assessed on a duologue (two person scene), and their performance of a role within an adapted playscript published by an established playwright.

The A2, (Year 2) includes 2 more units which are more demanding and intensify the knowledge, understanding and skills developed by students in year 1.

The course requires the study and creation of a unique piece of theatre and students are assessed on both the final performance within a live theatre context and on the developmental process. The exam unit asks students to explore a set text from the perspective of the director, and to evaluate an historical play within both its original and contemporary contexts.

What do I need to get onto it?

To study 3 AS levels, you need to have 5 GCSEs grades A-C (obtained in one sitting).

To study 4 AS levels, you need to have 6 GCSEs grade A-C (obtained in one sitting).

What type of assessment will be used?

AS (Year 1) is coursework based. Practical work is examined by an external examiner within a performance context in the college theatre. All written work is moderated by the external examiners and practical workshops assessed internally and moderated externally.

A2 (Year 2)

Unit 3 is both assessed practically by an external examiner, and all developmental notes externally moderated.

Unit 4 assessment takes the form of a 2.5 hour written examination

What else can I study?

Other A level subjects which are particularly suitable in combination with this include: English, Art, Film or Communication Studies and History.
