What does the A-level include?

Sociology is the study and analysis of society. This subject gives you the opportunity to look at the characteristics of our society and to examine areas such as gender, ethnicity and social class in relation to issues such as educational achievement, sexual stereotyping, institutional racism and the changing nature of family life. By undertaking this course you will develop your critical thinking skills, a skill that is very valuable in the jobs market. The study methods used are lectures, discussions, independent research, essay writing and reading. The AS consists of three elements. The first focuses on Family and leads to a module one examination. The second element considers Education. This along with a third element - Research Methods - leads to a module two examination.

The A2 also consists of three elements but has a greater emphasis on sociological theory. There will be a study of either Global Development – why countries are rich or poor – or Beliefs in Society where we look at what religion is and what it may mean to society. For one unit there will be a focus on Crime and Deviance where we look at areas including the criminalization of young people and why particular groups are more likely to be sent to prison.

How will I be assessed?

We follow the AQA exam board and there are two timed examinations at the end of the year.

What qualifications do I need to get onto the A-level?
