What does the A-level include?
The AS includes: a submission of a coursework folder of two pieces of work: an analytical comparison of two texts (one written, one multimodal e.g. email, advert, website), and adaptive writing plus commentary (where you adapt one of the texts from part 1 into a new text with a different audience or purpose. As well as two exam units: ‘Speech and Children’ and ‘Speech Varieties and Social Groups’
The A2 includes: developing your AS knowledge through two units: ‘Language and the Media’, where you will be required to submit a coursework folder of 3,000 words and an examined unit which focuses on the study of texts in three modes: spoken, written, and multimodal. How will I be assessed?
We follow the OCR exam board. On AS there is one coursework unit and one written paper and the same at A2. The AS paper is taken at the end of the first year and A2 exams are taken at the end of the second year. Exam board:
What do I need to get onto the Course?
You will need a minimum of grade B in GCSE English Language and you must also meet the general entry requirements of 6 GCSEs A*-C for a 3 AS Level program or 7 GCSEs A*-C for a 4 AS Level program; all obtained in one sitting.
What could I study English Language with?
There are many other AS-level subject which combine well, including other arts/humanities/social science subjects such as History, Sociology, Film Studies, Psychology, Media studies or Theatre Studies.
