What does the A-level include?
English Literature consists of detailed study of plays, poetry and novels; making you think critically and analytically about the text.
The AS includes: the study of two modern novels, a modern play, two poetry texts, and a literary critical text. There is a coursework option. The study methods used are lectures and discussions in both small and large groups. Many essays are set, both for homework and timed in class.
The A2 includes: a detailed study of a play by Shakespeare, another play, two poetry texts, and a novel.
How will I be assessed?
We follow the OCR exam board. Both AS and A2 consist of one two-hour paper and a coursework portfolio of 2000-3000 words. The AS papers are taken at the end of the first year and A2 exams are taken at the end of the second year.
What qualifications do I need to get onto the A-level?
You will need a minimum of grade B in GCSE English Language and you must also meet the general entry requirements of 6 GCSEs A*-C for a 3 AS Level program or 7 GCSEs A*-C for a 4 AS-level program; all obtained in one sitting
What else can I study?
There are many other AS-level subject which combine well with this subject, including other arts/humanities/social science subjects such as History, Sociology, Film Studies or Theatre Studies.
