This course is for teachers who are currently delivering at least 50 hours per annum in a Further Education (FE) college, Adult and Community Learning Centre or Learning Provider (this can be on a paid or voluntary basis).

The course covers the following mandatory units:

  • Teaching, learning and assessment in education and training
  • Developing teaching, learning and assessment in education and training
  • Theories principles and models in education and training
  • Wider professional practice in education and training
  • Plus a range of optional units that make up the qualification

Outline of Skills & Knowedge

The aim of the diploma is to provide teachers, trainers and tutors in, or intending to enter, a full teaching role with the underpinning knowledge, understanding and skills in order to effectively fulfil the full teacher role and to claim Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills status (QTLS).


  • To provide a sound educational basis for teaching in a wide range of learning institutions within the Lifelong Learning Sector
  • To develop the necessary knowledge, skills and attributes for teaching across a wide range of levels, audiences and learning programmes
  • To promote the development of curricula
  • To promote personal and professional development
  • To promote evaluation and reflection on personal and professional practice

What have students who have taken this course in the past progressed to?

Successful students have usually fulfilled the requirements of their employment by taking the programme.

Some students have gone on to gain Qualified Teaching and Learning Skills status through the process of Professional Formation and/or a specialist Diploma.

How will I learn?

You will be taught in a variety of ways, including practical sessions, but lessons will typically consist of active learning in a classroom environment. You also learn on the job through your teaching practice, and reflecting on your practice.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is through completion of a Personal and Professional Practice File (3PF) and 8 observations of your teaching practice totalling not less than 8 hours.

How much time should I be expected to spend on assignments, projects, field trips etc

In addition to the time spent in classes in College, you will be expected to spend approximately 5 hours per week undertaking academic research and producing work for assessment.

What qualifications or skills do I need to show I have before I can enrol?

Outline full entry requirements

Students who come on the course must have at least a Level 3 qualification in a subject specialism they teach in. A degree, or Level 3/4 professional qualification is also a requirement. Candidates are also required to demonstrate a level of English commensurate with the programme (see below).

We may, in some circumstances, ask for a reference.

Expected prior knowledge

Candidates must be in a teaching role when the course commences.

English level

You are expected to have a Level 2 qualification in English.

Before/when you join the course you will take an initial assessment to determine your level.

Mathematics level

You do not need a specific Mathematics qualification to join this course, but you should be aware that teaching professionals should be qualified to Level 2.
