The course is most suitable for teachers, tutors and trainers who may be working within a Further Education (FE) college, Adult and Community Learning Centre or Learning Provider and are currently not qualified. The course is also suitable for those not yet in a teaching or training role, but wish to be.

Course Content

The course covers the following units:

  • Understanding roles, responsibilities and relationships in education and training
  • Understanding and using inclusive teaching and learning approaches in education and training
  • Understanding assessment in education and training

Outline of Skills & Knowledge

  • To understand the roles and responsibilities in relation to teaching
  • To understand appropriate teaching and learning approaches within a candidate’s specialist area
  • To plan, deliver and evaluate micro-teaching sessions
  • To observe and evaluate micro-teaching sessions
  • To understand the use of assessment methods and record keeping

What have students who have taken this course in the past progressed to?

Successful students have progressed onto the Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training and the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training.

A number of students have fulfilled the requirements of their employment by taking the programme.

Some students have found teaching and training related employment as a result of doing the qualification.

How will I learn?

You will be taught in a variety of ways, including practical sessions, but lessons will typically consist of active learning in a classroom environment.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is through assignment coursework, and practical assessment in the classroom – this includes a 15 minute micro-teaching session, which you must deliver to your peers, and take part in the evaluation process of other micro-teaching sessions.

How much time should I be expected to spend on assignments, projects, field trips etc

In addition to the time spent in classes in College, you will be expected to spend approximately 3 hours per week on research, and completion of coursework.

What qualifications or skills do I need to show I have before I can enrol?

Typically students who come on the course have Level 3, or first degree, qualifications in a subject specialism they want to teach/train in. However, there are no formal qualification requirements for the programme, except a level of English commensurate with the programme (see below).

We may, in some circumstances, ask for a reference.

Expected prior knowledge

No prior knowledge, or experience, of teaching is necessary to do this course.

English level

You are expected to demonstrate Level 2 competencies in English.

Before/when you join the course you will take an initial assessment to determine your level.

Mathematics level

You do not need a specific Mathematics qualification to join this course, but you should be aware that teaching professionals should be qualified to Level 2.
